NP3 is een representatieve mediacombinatie rond de grenzen van de experimentele hedendaagse kunst. Een podium voor jong denkende beeldenzoekers, met een focus op innovatie in het alternatieve veld: een oriëntatiehulp, referentie en bron van inspiratie voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in hedendaagse culturele tendensen op wat voor vlak dan ook.
NP3 & Visuele Cultuur
Het interdisciplinaire terrein van de visuele cultuur is typerend voor deze tijd: zowel film en televisie als reclame, de bebouwde omgeving en nieuwe digitale en elektronische presentatievormen behoren ertoe, maar ook kledingcodes en de manier waarop tijdschriften en winkels zich visueel profileren. Onder visuele cultuur valt het totaal aan visuele boodschappen, iconen en codes waarmee we dagelijks worden geconfronteerd.
Vanuit artistiek oogpunt verdient de visuele cultuur meer aandacht. Net als voor beeldende kunst geldt namelijk dat wat zich erbinnen afspeelt, eveneens expressief, inhoudelijk gelaagd, bewonderenswaardig, irritant, diepgaand, intellectueel, cult, minimaal, conceptueel, kritisch, ironisch en betekenisvol kan zijn. Jammer genoeg toonde het kunstcircuit tot nu toe, alle debatten over kruisbestuivingen en samenwerkingen ten spijt, toch altijd weer werk van beeldend kunstenaars die pasten binnen veilige kaders. Kunst blijft kunst, wat daarbuiten gebeurt is één grote pixelbrij.
Wij vragen ons af hoe de beeldende kunst, die zich verhoudt tot de wereld van vandaag, eruit zou zien als de grenzen worden opgerekt. Tegelijkertijd willen we de vraag blijven stellen of er wel sprake is van een nieuwe ontwikkeling op het gebied van beeldproduktie: is er wel een terrein te veroveren? En zo ja, is de visuele cultuur dan een verrijking voor of verloedering van de beeldende kunst?
Voor ons is in dit kader ook van belang de vraag te stellen: hoe nu verder met het kunstenaarsinitiatief? Zij was ooit de instelling die direct vanuit het perspectief van de beeldende kunstenaar werkt. Past een kunstenaarsinitiatief nog wel in deze tijd van beeldbombardement? Is het perspectief van de kunstenaar inmiddels niet heel erg veranderd? Past een kunstenaarsinitiatief nog wel in het Visueel Cultuur Concept? En hoe zouden de tentoonstellingen eruit gaan zien? Kunnen we ze nog wel tentoonstellingen blijven noemen? Wat is de rol van de curator? Is iedereen die de afstandsbediening ter hand neemt en daarmee dus zelf de samenstelling van het programma bepaalt, de curator van de Visuele Cultuur geworden? Wie is verantwoordelijk voor wat er te zien is?
NP3 wil hierin als intermediair fungeren. Wij zijn een Visueel Cultuur Initiatief: een representatieve mediacombinatie rond de grenzen van de experimentele hedendaagse kunst. Een podium voor jong denkende beeldenzoekers, met een focus op innovatie in het alternatieve veld: een oriëntatiehulp, referentie en bron van inspiratie voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in hedendaagse culturele tendensen op wat voor vlak dan ook.
NP3 begeeft zich in de discussie over beeldende kunst. Door een radicale keuze te maken probeert NP3 die discussie verder te brengen. Niet langer wordt gezocht naar kunst die met werktuigen gemaakt wordt, waarbij de werktuigen vernieuwen maar de resultaten een vergelijkbare, statische vorm van beeldende middelen laten zien (bijvoorbeeld de verandering van de kwast naar Photoshop). Het Visueel Cultuur Initiatief zoekt naar kunst van nieuwe werktuigen. De software zelf is de kunst. NP3 kan beschouwd worden als de software van het Visueel Cultuur Initiatief.
De activiteiten van NP3 zijn gericht op het onderzoek naar die visuele cultuur, NP3 wil personen uitnodigen te participeren wiens werk of denken bijdraagt aan de visuele cultuur. Afhankelijk van de persoon, groep of vraagstelling kiezen wij voor het juiste middel om de activiteit vorm te geven.
NP3 & Visual Culture
The interdisciplinary field of visual culture is a characteristic of our time: both film and television as well as advertisement, urban space and digital and electronic ways of presentation are part of it, but also fashion codes and the way in which magazines and shops present themselves visually. Visual Culture is the sum of visual messages, icons and codes with which we are confronted every day.
From the artistic point of view visual culture deserves to be paid more attention to. What counts for the arts, it being expressive, layered, astonishing, irritating, deep, intellectual, cult, minimal, conceptual, critical, ironical and meaningful, counts as well for visual culture. Unfortunately the art circuit showed eventually, despite all debates about crossovers and collaborations, works of artists who fit within her safe borders. Art stays art and what happens outside is one big mess of pixels.
We ask ourselves what visual art, which is related to our daily world, would look like if her borders were expanded. At the same time we want to ask if there is indeed a new development in the field of image production: is there something to conquer? And if so, is visual culture an enrichment or declination for contemporary art?
In this case there is another important question: what about the artists' initiative*? Once they were the institutions which worked directly from the artists' perspective. Does an artists' initiative still fit in this era of image bombing? Has the perspective of the artist changed already? Does an artists' initiative fit in the Concept of Visual Culture? And what would an exhibition look like? Can we still call them exhibitions? What role is left for the curator? Has anyone with a remote control in his hands, making his own programme, become the curator of the Visual Culture? Who is responsible for what there is to see?
NP3 wants to act as intermediate. We are an Initiative for Visual Culture: a representative media combination at the edges of experimental contemporary art. A platform for image-seekers, young of spirit, with a focus on innovation in the alternative field: a guide, a reference and a source of inspiration for anyone who is interested in contemporary cultural tendencies of any kind.
NP3 takes part in the discussion about art. By making a radical choice NP3 tries to move on the discussion. We don't look for art made with tools, in which tools generate new things but the results have a similar, static form of representation (e.g. the transformation from a paintbrush to Photoshop). The Initiative for Visual Culture is looking for the art of new tools. The software is the art. NP3 can be seen as the software of the Initiative for Visual Culture. The activities of NP3 are focused on the examination of the visual culture; NP3 wants to invite people whose work contributes to this visual culture to participate. Dependent on the person, group or question we choose the right resources to give form to an activity.
*Artists' initiatives: Groups of artists who operate outside the mainstream often present a rich substratum for experimentation and new developments.
