FINISSAGE SCIENCE FRICTION BY SMIT&&ANDERSSON

SUNDAY DECEMBER 16, 2018

TIMETABLE – ! alles muss raus !

14.00 – 17.00 PART 1 – concept & augmentation (research exhibition)
17.00 – 00.00 PART 2 – hyperspace (performative)

The final page. The final paragraph – then S&&A close this book.

Tomorrow: the last adventure – the last lizard will be slain.

For the first part of this final Sunday you are invited to interact with the research installation. Experience the Science Friction story that has played over the past three month. Build a cloud with Lee & Dragan – or see sounds with Sander. Be – you playful human.

Different elements of the research will be emphasized by Klaas Hendrik Hantschel (smit) && Hannes Arvid Andersson (andersson) throughout the day.

17.00 HELLO WORLD! & BEETSTACKS for S&&A by Katie’s Kitchen
Bring your own records!!!!
Ever thought your vinyl was missing in the mix? Here you can have it tested.

17.30 The Document – A phenomenological drift through hypertime and -space.
The document is the first translation of the incredible amount of data created by the installation. The piece invites the audience to come along on an audio visual journey following the bits and bytes of shared memory; the traces of life – the hyperspace of Science Friction. Those imprints become words; become rhythmic; become language. Become story… Become tale – become history.

18.15 Transversion vs. schiEf – maybe Lucia
History remade. Classical legends crashing into pop titans – all hail Gonald´s Trunk. And yet, somehow … it works. Rewriting history – one glitch at a time. The miracle of technology? Or it´s curse… Sympoeisis is the word of the hour. It clashes the old and the new; the made and the found into a trance of the present.

19.00 Forrest the resident poet

19.20 Confused – the anderssonian instrument – maybe Chelo
A collage of moments that were caught; freshly invented instruments and kittens from the anthropocene. A confused sound piece. Also light.

21.00 The final pile – feat. Glamdrag & Lee

22.20 Dance your socks off – Miss Jay and Tizian
Put on your fancy sock. Or are you more the mix and match type? High socks, low socks, those socks with toes are also cool. Maybe you got very special socks? Or Christmas socks. All socks are welcome as we close this one with some bambule.

Still Waiting by Marit Westerhuis

Still Waiting by Marit Westerhuis @ Groninger Cultural Embassy Leeuwarden

September 21 – November 18, 2018

Groninger Cultural Embassy Leeuwarden
Floating Cubestees at Zuiderstadsgracht, near Nieuweweg 3
Leeuwarden, The Netherlands
Open: Wed–Sun 13–17 hrs
Free admission

The province and the municipality of Groningen realized a temporary Cultural Embassy in Leeuwarden as part of Leeuwarden-Friesland European Capital of Culture 2018.

NP3 is one of the art institutions that realized a project in the embassy about the impact and possibilities of water and hydrogen.

Research into new forms of energy and art are essentially similar. Artists and researchers are driven in their search for a next step in development. Both encourage thinking, action and seeking opportunities for development and visibility. But there is also sometimes impatience, disappointment or tension on both of them.

Waiting, waiting for the train, waiting for an answer, waiting for a download, waiting for an idea, waiting for progress, and in the end waiting for decay. Waiting always takes a long time and brings about a reaction in your body; the feeling of tension, impatience and nervousness manifests itself in the cracking of knuckles, biting of nails, grinding of teeth and chewing on pens.

Why is our body programmed to process the reaction in this way? These reactions are universal, but the most iconic reaction is tapping with fingers. Artist Marit Westerhuis is a finger tapper herself and decided to turn this rhythmic action into a media installation, where she wants to confront the visitor with this universal – often unconscious – act. Various robot hands will make this rhythmic movement, resonating in the space.

The installation is also researching the feasibility of using hydrogen technology in art. During the project the conjunction between science and art turned out to be more difficult than expected. Sunday November 18 from 13.00 – 17.00 hrs, Marit Westerhuis, in collaboration with DEOdrive, will present the results of their research on art driven by hydrogen.

Marit Westerhuis studied at the Art Academy Minerva (Groningen) and the Frank Mohr Institute (Groningen). Since 2018 she is a resident artist at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten(Amsterdam). Westerhuis uses scientific and technological methods in her work. Measured with sensors are her own body values, like heart rate, blood pressure and brain waves. She then uses this personal data as input for media installations – such as self-made drawing machines, which make abstract line drawings with this type of information. In this way, Westerhuis – at a time when we can map everything through technology – questions the way in which we look at our body and our ‘self’.

Grande Opening – join the mothernode
27 sep: 17.00

The project “SCIENCE FRICTION” presents an empty canvas – a lonely node – that gets filled with the data created in the 3 month time in which it exists.

S&&A got invited to create an artist book for NP3 as their participation in the WKB´18. A book – of the 21st century.

As digital media has shifted our information intake from static to fluid, the lack of restrictions of time and space make it hard to keep up – to know where one story ends and another begins. The Internet – the Cloud – the Algorithms – all words we know, words we live by. But what are they? These words we know so well. And how can we write with them?

We built a “little” Internet. A framework that gives space and time to the social network human – physical and digital. A local network situation that researches the interaction between the “real” and the other “real” in a playful way.

The performative research installation “SCIENCE FRICTION” takes us on a journey through digital schizophrenia and closely knitted structures of data avatars and algorithms. It opens the table for discussion and thought on the present network situations condition.

All data created in the installation adds up and tells the story that will be told in the artist book. During the installation all data collected will be made accessible to the public. We are looking forward to research, bend, and experience the possibilities of interaction that the social data creates – together with the audience.

We invite you to join us in our attempt to develop a network that proposes a symbiosis between the human and her machines.

Come join us for drinks, music and discussions and feed the machine created by the artist duo. Become part of the network restricted by time and space. Leave a trace for future generations. Its up to you. All data created in the installation will be open for research and accessible at all times inside the spacial confinements of the installation.

SMIT && ANDERSSON is a philosophically oriented tech-art && research duo based in Groningen, the Netherlands. Our goal is to investigate the phenomenological aspects of perception; body; space; and time, – in a present where we all carry a refracted version of ourselves in our pockets. and to expand the confinements of language and narrative; seeing and being. Our wish to establish a form of communication more suitable for discussing the complexities of contemporaneity; A trans-medial language appropriate of the anthropocene; A language for the networked human.

TheParallelShow GrandeFinale is a project for improvised performance. It will take place on Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July, simultaneously at two different locations:  bur0 Gr0ningen, the white cube of NP3 in Groningen (NL) and the chapel of Greylight Projects in Brussels (BE).
On Saturday at 10.00 two groups of performers will start working at both locations. The performers will start with nothing but each other and the empty space they are in. While they are working, a video will be recorded and streamed in real-time to the other location where it is projected on a wall. These projected video images ensure that there will be a mixing of physically and virtually present performers (and visitors). The doors will be opened from 10.00 till 17.00.

After 17.00, the two groups of performers will travel, by van, to the other location.
They will probably pass each other about halfway.  On Sunday they will again work from 10.00 till 17.00, in that second location.

After this last day of work, Sunday at 17.00, all performers will leave for Pictura in Dordrecht (half way between Groningen and Brussels), where they are invited to a public dinner in the Grote Zaal at 20.00. As in the other parts of the project, visitors are very welcome to join.
During the dinner a performative conversation might take place.

TheParallelShow GrandeFinale is a project of Unnoticed Art. All parts of the project are open to the public and freely accessible. The project is kindly supported by the Municipality of Dordrecht and by the participating organisations.

FINISSAGE MARKER

TONIGHT Saturday, June 9 at 19.30 hrs
Grote Markt Groningen

NP3 and CBK Groningen cordially invite you to join together with a bite and drink MARKER.

The six artists Ruben Boxman, Henri van Hoeve, Sarah Janssen, Lee Mc Donald, Bert Scholten and Albert Westerhoff offer the last opportunity to experience, taste, discuss, see, play or climb their work.

MARKER MARKS THE MARKET

Art manifestation MARKER

Opening: Thursday May 31 from 19.30 hrs. by Paul de Rook, Alderperson of Culture
Manifestation: June 1 – 9
Daily open: 10.00 – 22.00 hrs.
Free Entrance
Daily at 19.30 hrs. at guided tour or a meet up with one of the six artists.

From the 31st May to 9th June, NP3 and CBK Groningen will transform the Grote Markt into a new stage for contemporary art in Groningen: MARKER. With the Grote Markt as a source of inspiration, six artists investigate what the significance of the central square was, is and what it can be. They have developed unique art works that respond to the use and perception of this square, its cultural history, distinctive architecture and the influence of technology. Through the different art works, you can literally and figuratively eat up the cultural heritage, see well known Groningers come back to life, reflect on the inner city, climb to great heights, be part of the research of privacy in public spaces or surprise everyone with a sound performance, live at the Grote Markt.

The Grote Markt is the most important square in Groningen, with a concentration of restaurants, bars and shops as well as historic architectural icons such as the Martini Tower and City Hall. This central square is a free, accessible place where exchange and interaction take plays during all hours of the day and week. The location is also used as a market square for entrepreneurs as well as a stage for festivities and official activities. Now, the east side of the market is under large-scale renovations which are clearly visible.

For MARKER, NP3 and CBK combined their expertise and networks to encourage and support regional artists in the development of their artistic practices by giving them an assignment for creating a work in the public space. NP3 and CBK aim to create a new public stage with MARKER that will strengthen the art sector in Northern Netherlands.

NP3 and CBK opted for an open call as they could reach a wide range of artists, architects and designers to sign up for MARKER. From more than 40 applications, ten artists / art collectives were invited to make a design proposal based with documentation and their motivational statements. In the end, six artists were selected, keeping in mind their artistic quality, practicality and the work’s interaction with the public.

These six artists will start constructing and placing their work on Monday May 28 at the Grote Markt:

Ruben Boxman | Henri van Hoeve | Sarah Janssen | Lee Mc Donald | Bert Scholten | Albert Westerhoff

MARKER offers the artists a temporary stage and the next necessary step for their artistic development while making them visible to the audience. CBK and NP3 challenged the artists in a talent development trajectory which allowed the artists to take further steps in their professional artistic career. And to develop themselves in new and (un)known areas where challenges and developments await. NP3 and CBK coach the artists on the creative and business aspects of their artistic practice, such as working on commission, finance and communication. Within the process, the artists have all artistc freedom to explore and experiment.

Exhibition MARKER @NP3 and CBK Groningen – May 19th to June 16th, 2018

In addition to the art manifestation MARKER, the six artists will also present work and background information related to their artworks on the Grote Markt, at the exhibition spaces of NP3 and CBK. In the exhibitions you will see photos, models, working space, video’s, multiples, sculptures and sketches. The exhibition concept was developed by Vector-i.

NP3  & CBK | Grote Markt Groningen

New Art Manifestation MARKER
@ Grote Markt Groningen
May 31 – June 9, 2018

NP3 and CBK Groningen combine forces for a new art event MARKER. Six Groninger artists will present their work at the Grote Markt and offer a programme at and around this square. The Grote Markt and its immediate surroundings are the source of inspiration, as well as working and presentation space. MARKER challenges residents and visitors to take a fresh, critical look at the public space. Artists could sign up for MARKER via an open call. Out of all applications, NP3 and CBK selected six artists: Ruben Boxman, Henri van Hoeve, Sarah Janssen, Lee McDonald, Bert Scholten and Albert Westerhoff. All realise a unique work of art inspired by the Grote Markt, interacting with the environment and actively involving visitors.

NP3 and CBK both support talented artists in their professional careers. MARKER is an addition to the existing visual arts in the Northern Netherlands, in order to strengthen this sector and make it more visible.

MARKER is supported by the gemeente Groningen, Kunstraad Groningen, Mondriaan Fonds, Scholten Kamminga Fonds, Emmaplein Foundation, Stichting Beringer Hazewinkel and BNG Cultuurfonds.
