Dolmen
Marit Westerhuis
Opening & Launch Time Capsule | 19.00 hrs.

As winner of YGA III, the collaboration of NP3 and the Groninger Museum, Marit created her solo exhibition MEGALITH (2022) in Coop Himmelb(l)au Paviljon of the Groninger Museum. After the exhibition, NP3 challenged Marit to reuse the materials to create a new artwork for MOBi Square Garden. Rather than discarding or storing away the leftovers, she reimagined them in Dolmen, a sort of a sequel, not merely a second artwork but a second chance to make up for the surplus material of MEGALITH.

Inspired by ancient dolmens, Dolmen becomes a burial site. Marit not only ‘buried’ MEGALITH and its physical materials, but also her own reckoning with unsustainable practices. Flowers and plants are now growing on top of it, which echoes the phenomenon of flowers appearing on graves. For the selection of plants and flowers Marit worked closely with Cruydt-Hoeck, an indigenous seed and plant nursery with a mission: making an impact for biodiversity restoration. With Dolmen Marit not only avoids the waste of MEGALITH but actively contributes to the biodiversity of NP3 | MOBi Square Garden.

Dolmen represents a step in Marit’s inquiry into the traces that we leave behind, and critically addresses an important question: how to raise awareness on ecological issues without perpetuating them?

Dolmen is developed within the re:de:construct concept of NP3. After launching the time capsule, Dolmen will become part of the 24/7 artworks on view at MOBi Square Garden.

Dolmen is made possible by Mondriaan Fonds and Amarte Fonds.
Special thanks to Cruydt-Hoeck.
