Location-project of artist Harmen de Hoop in collaboration with
Prof. dr. Steven Hoekstra (Associate Professor of Atomic and Molecular Physics,
Rijksuniversiteit Groningen).

‘Harmen de Hoop is a visual artist who makes anonymous and illegal interventions in public space. He works on the notion of ‘place’ in the contemporary city, the behaviour of individuals or groups, and the conflicts of interests in public space. With his interventions he breaches the systems and brings forward another, often humane perspective. With this he tries to let people look at themselves in a different way, often with a sense of humor.’

Forget policy, balloting, studio visits or a discussion about the why’s and how so’s at NP3:
a critical investigation by NP3 on the (im)possibilities of contemporary experimental curatorial practices.

In three critical ‘public projects’ NP3 approached the process of the changing role of the artist and the artwork in relation to the increasing interest in the ‘role and influence of the (art)public’. NP3 initiated, from the perspective of the public, the triptych programme 1) Garde Blanche – l’art pour l’artiste (2010), 2) Crème de la Crème – la condition humaine (2011) and 3) www.ranking- (2012).

Everyday citizens curated NP3’s Crème de la Crème exhibition, bringing in artists of their choosing. In Garde Blanche the artist took over the curatorial baton from NP3. The citizens and artists who were the first to apply for the exhibitions, were given the spaces of their choosing, together with the financial means to realise their exhibition plan. The mighty Google search engine was appointed curator for the third project, Artists submitted their names to a custom-made search engine, directly linked to the Google data flow that marks our information-age society. After all, Google statistics, website hits and unique visitor counts seem to rank your “importance” these days. Your Google ranking grows with every search entry bearing your details, just as your use of Google on your website, blog and youtube channel increases your digital imprint. All these factors contributed to artists rising on the ‘very important artist’ list of

After a runtime of exactly one year, went offline and the official winner, our ‘Most-Googled Person’, was announced: Berndnaut Smilde. The development of his cumulus series, which have been purchased by the Saatchi gallery, had caused a viral stir and quickly raced Smilde into the digital limelight, earning him first place in the ranking system.

QUASi – Berndnaut Smilde
Berndnaut lives and works in Amsterdam. He graduated in 2001 from the Minerva Academy in Groningen and achieved in 2005 his Masters of Arts at the Frank Mohr Institute. Since then Berndnaut has built an international career, which in 2012 accelerated through the development of his ‘CLOUD’-works. Berndnaut shows his work in museums, galleries, art spaces and media around the world, from London to Shanghai.

In his artistic process Berndnaut researches the physical (de)construction of materials, light, space, the experience and the atmosphere in relation to the architectural environment. He developed his latest work, the site-specific installation QUASi, especially for bur0 Gr0ningen. Berndnaut constructs meaning and consciously makes new connections. The combination of everyday and unusual elements; from the volatility of cumulus-projections to the sculptural plastic foundry molds for Roman pillars. In the hallway he shows anagrams made from his own name and transforms theater decor canvas, light sources and plastic pillars to an lighted night panorama in the exhibition display. In the evening, the same display features a prismatic panorama.

Quasi is a frozen moment, the ‘Traumbild’ between presentation and representation, the visible and the invisible. He experiments with his fascination for the grey zone of it ‘is’ and ‘is not’, the in-between moment between the existing and the temporary. All elements in the exhibition QUASi form a physical construct and at the same time they remain a moment in time, the ‘quasi’ in the artistic process of Berndnaut.

Marit Westerhuis

Marit Westerhuis uses methods inspired by science, as well as methods derived from data capture technology. Living in the ‘Big Data’ era, we leave behind traces of personal information which are consequently used for commercial purposes. As an artist she doesn’t use data to sketch a bigger picture of human behaviour. Instead, she turns data into a representation by zooming in on the individual. The representation is as personal as a self-portrait but as excessive as an archive, as voyeuristic as reading a diary, and as precise as a medical examination.

NP3 & Groninger Museum present winner YGA II – Esther de Graaf

NP3_GM_YGAII_2014June 11 – October 2, 2016
Branching Fields by Esther de Graaf

@ Groninger Museum – Coop Himmelb(l)au Pavilion

Young Grunn Artist
After years of short coaching residencies with substantive support NP3 started in 2011 the one-year development coaching program for young talented artists of Groningen: Young Grunn Artist (YGA) The YGA trajectory is an extension to the current work practice of the artist, with all the necessary support on content, business and promotion to professionalize, to obtain the personal artistic aims and the opportunity to gain the  necessary connection to the (inter)national art world.

Next to individual coaching, the artists receive a personal work and development budget to create new work or hire expertise, to network with art professionals, take part in a short international exchange program, or make a short working trip to an artistic and cultural metropolis.

In the second edition, YGA II, NP3 and the Groninger Museum decided to collaborate in the long-term development program for young talented artists of Groningen. Together they search for the artist who is ready for the next step in his/her career, an exhibition in the Groninger Museum! From over 40 submissions three artists were selected for the YGA II trajectory: Esther de Graaf, Berndnaut Smilde and Adri Schokker.

In May 2014 NP3 and the Groninger Museum announced the winner of
Young Grunn Artist II: Esther de Graaf.

Branching Fields – Esther de Graaf
De Graaf makes extremely vulnerable, fragile and temporary sculptures out of cheap everyday materials such as cardboard, wire, tape and cellophane, which she transforms into extraordinary constructions that evoke an almost physical empathy. On the occasion of this exhibition, De Graaf created works of art in response to the interior of the Coop Himmelb(l)au Pavilion.
